Ancient Agora

by Amanda | 03 12 2008

I was transfixed by these artifacts during my recent visit to Greece. There were several pieces of pottery and copper, in addition to this ivory sculpture, on display in Athens and the Vatican City. Fragments of artwork found buried in digs and recomposed into their original configuration. The pieces that were missing from the original had been filled in with wax, terracotta or black clay, depending on the material of the original work.

Though efforts are made to keep each piece as accurate to their original form as possible, I can’t help but think of these pieces as collaborations. A piece originally created several years ago, and reinterpreted with present day materials and ideas.
